Why did the first Europeans settled in the U.S.?
From what I know, Columbus came to America in search of trade route India. India was a prosperous nation at that point in time. But continental America was inhabited only by Native Americans. So I was wondering what was the motivation of the first Europeans to settle here. It was hard to setup right everything from agriculture, workshops, schools, markets and social institutions. I wonder what is the overall motivation and incentives for the solution of its kind in the unknown and faraway places.
Columbus thought he could find a shorter, less costly trade route to India by sailing to the opposite direction from the path of the companies that trade going. Basically, I wanted to make money on the spice trade with India. Ended up discovering the land that Europeans had no prior knowledge (Supposedly. …. read on Viking previous browsers.) Anyway, I grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, and am well versed in the history of European settlement and the myth of the area. While Quebec City that celebrates its 400 anniversary this year, Boston is not that old. The Pilgrims landed in Plymouth in 1620 … These Europeans who settled in Massachusetts seeking religious freedom. They were very pious Christian people who raised a lot of money to cross the Atlantic to begin a new life away from the constraints of their governments. I can not tell you much about the rest of the first settlement, Jamestown, Virginia. Santa Fe, New Mexico. But you see the example of a French colony, a colony British and a Spanish colony. Of course, governments wanted money and power. Individuals who make exploration of the Americas were motivated by some the same reasons to go to space now. Of course, much of it was greed, but some of it was simply for the adventure or the glory of being one of the first to go where His people had never been before. Pioneering spirit, and all that. Good question.
